Crowdsource Recipe Testing: Grilling Edition

Hi everyone – hope your weekend was wonderful! I had a very nice weekend out on the trails biking and running before it rained. How was the weather where you live this weekend?

All of these Spring showers have finally made me realize that Spring truly is upon us and my favorite thing to do once the weather gets warmer is to grill out. When I first became a vegetarian I struggled with grilling because I just wasn’t sure what you could grill other than meat. Wow, was I in the dark ages or what?

There are so many amazing things to grill besides meat and this realization helped expand my grilling menu from just a few items to many. One thing to remember about grilling homemade vegan burgers is that they often will fall apart upon hitting the grate, however, you can warm a skillet on the grate and cook them in the skillet. While you won’t get the traditional grill marks you still get much of the smoky flavor that comes with grilled foods.

Here are some of the best-looking grill-centric vegan recipes I found on the web.

Lima and Bean Burgers – While this one isn’t grilled in the recipes, it’s a good-looking burger that you could easily cook in a skillet on the grill. I love the use of┬áLima┬ábeans as it’s not an ingredient I often give much thought to. Also, any variation on the veggie burger is always welcome in my house.

Spicy Grilled Eggplant with Red Pepper & Parsley – While this blog isn’t necessarily for vegan recipes, this yummy-looking grilled eggplant is perfect for grilling out on a warm spring evening! Love the Asian flavors and spice level!

Grilled Tofu with Chopped Salad – This tofu recipe is very simple and it looks extremely refreshing. The addition of the easy chopped salad with tomatoes and olives makes the dish. I’m always looking for last-minute grilling ideas and this recipe involves very little prep work.

Maple Grilled Tempeh with Quinoa, Mushrooms, & Green Beans – Tempeh is one of my favorite vegan proteins to grill and I love this recipe because it incorporates other grains and veggies to create a complete meal in very little time. Also, giving a sweet kick to any savory dish always creates a real depth of flavor that people love.

Grilled Pineapple Crush – Ok, this is not technically a food item, but beverages (especially of the adult variety) are an all-important part of the grilling experience as well. This yummy-looking cocktail makes me want to bust out the grill asap!
